This quick and easy cranberry orange sauce is brightened with fresh orange zest and infused with a sprig of rosemary for a savory, aromatic twist. Perfect for holiday feasts or weeknight dinners, it comes together in under 20 minutes and is sure to impress.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice (from about 1 large orange)
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 large sprig fresh rosemary (4–5 inches long)
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse cranberries and pick out any soft or damaged ones. Zest the orange before juicing it. Juice the orange to get ½ cup of juice. Strip the rosemary leaves from the bottom inch of the sprig, keeping the sprig whole.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, orange juice, water, and salt. Stir over medium heat until sugar is completely dissolved, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add cranberries and the whole rosemary sprig. Stir well. The cranberries will start to pop as they heat.
  4. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most cranberries have burst and the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove the rosemary sprig and discard. Stir in the orange zest.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool for about 10 minutes. Serve warm, at room temperature, or cold.

Notes

Don’t overcook; the sauce will thicken as it cools. Use a whole rosemary sprig for easy removal. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed. This sauce can be made ahead and actually tastes better after a day or two in the fridge. Double the batch and freeze one jar for later.
