Frankenstein guacamole - featured image

A nostalgic Halloween guacamole shaped like Frankenstein’s monster, with olive eyes and sour cream hair. This creamy, chunky dip is quick to make, crowd-pleasing, and perfect for spooky gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 ripe avocados (Hass recommended)
  • 1 small lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt (plus more to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 cup black olives, pitted (large ones preferred)
  • 1–2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt (optional, for hair and bolts)
  • Corn chips or tortilla chips (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients first: dice the red onion finely, mince the jalapeño (after removing seeds), chop the cilantro, and juice the lime.
  2. Cut the avocados in half lengthwise, twist apart, remove pits, and scoop the flesh into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mash the avocados to desired consistency using a potato masher or fork—leave some chunks for texture (about 75% smooth).
  4. Add lime juice, diced onion, minced jalapeño, chopped cilantro, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  5. Spread the guacamole onto a serving plate or small platter. Use a spatula or spoon to shape it into a rough rectangle or oval about 1 to 1.5 inches thick (Frankenstein’s head). Smooth the top and edges.
  6. Create Frankenstein’s face: place two black olives where the eyes should go (about one-third down from the top). Use a third olive, sliced in half lengthwise, to make a mouth (straight line or slight frown). Optionally add a small olive slit for a nose.
  7. Add hair and neck bolts: if using sour cream or Greek yogurt, spoon a small amount onto the top of the head and spread gently for messy hair, or pipe it using a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off. Place two small dollops on either side of the neck area and press an olive slice into each for bolts.
  8. Surround Frankenstein with tortilla chips arranged around the edges of the plate. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best texture, use ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. Don’t over-mash—leave some chunks for structure. If guacamole is too thin, it won’t hold its shape; if that happens, serve as ‘swamp guacamole.’ Use a wet spatula to smooth the surface. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning if making ahead. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
