These adorable mummy pretzel dogs are a fun and easy Halloween snack made with hot dogs wrapped in pizza dough, brushed with a baking soda wash for authentic pretzel flavor, and finished with mustard eyes. Perfect for parties, they’re ready in about 30 minutes and guaranteed to make everyone smile.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (8 count) hot dogs or cocktail sausages
  • 1 can (13.8 oz) refrigerated pizza dough (or 1 lb frozen bread dough, thawed)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Yellow mustard (for the eyes)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (for the pretzel wash)
  • 2 cups warm water (for the pretzel wash)
  • Ketchup (for serving, optional)
  • Cheese sauce (for serving, optional)
  • Honey mustard (for serving, optional)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the refrigerated pizza dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut the dough into long strips about 1/2 inch wide and 6-8 inches long.
  3. Take one hot dog and start wrapping a dough strip around it, slightly overlapping each wrap. Leave about 1/2 inch of exposed hot dog at the top for the eyes. Don’t wrap too tightly. Place the wrapped mummy on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs and dough strips.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 cups of warm water and 1/4 cup of baking soda until the baking soda is mostly dissolved. Using a pastry brush, gently brush each mummy with the baking soda solution, covering the top and sides.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush each mummy with the egg wash. If desired, sprinkle a little coarse sea salt on top.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the mummies are deep golden brown and the hot dogs are heated through.
  7. Let the mummies cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes. Once cool enough to handle, use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to dab two small dots of yellow mustard on the exposed hot dog area for the eyes.
  8. Serve warm with your choice of dipping sauces.

Notes

The baking soda wash is essential for authentic pretzel flavor and dark brown crust. Let mummies cool for 2-3 minutes before adding mustard eyes to prevent them from sliding off. For best results, use all-beef hot dogs and refrigerated pizza dough. Mummies can be assembled up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerated; add baking soda wash and egg wash just before baking.
