These easy bento-box ham and cheese roll-ups for kids are a quick, no-cook lunch solution that picky eaters love. Made with simple ingredients like tortillas, deli ham, and cheese, they come together in under 10 minutes and are perfect for school lunches, playdates, or road trips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large flour tortillas (burrito-sized work best, but soft taco size is fine too)
  • 8 slices of deli ham (honey ham or black forest ham recommended)
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese (or provolone, mozzarella, or Swiss)
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise or honey mustard (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 cup red grapes, washed and dried
  • 1/2 cup baby carrots or cucumber slices
  • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes (halved for younger kids)
  • Optional: a small handful of pretzels or goldfish crackers for crunch

Instructions

  1. Soften the tortillas. If your tortillas are straight from the fridge, warm them for about 10 seconds in the microwave. This makes them more pliable and less likely to crack when you roll them. You want them warm but not hot.
  2. Spread the cream cheese. If you are using cream cheese, spread a thin, even layer over the entire surface of each tortilla. Go all the way to the edges — this creates a seal that keeps the fillings in place. If you are using mayo or honey mustard, spread that instead.
  3. Layer the ham. Place two slices of ham on each tortilla, overlapping them slightly. Make sure the ham covers the tortilla evenly, leaving about a half-inch border around the edges. This prevents the filling from spilling out when you roll.
  4. Add the cheese. Place one slice of cheese on top of the ham. If you are using a large tortilla, you can cut the cheese slice in half and arrange the pieces side by side. For smaller tortillas, one full slice is perfect.
  5. Roll it up tight. Starting at one edge, roll the tortilla as tightly as you can without squeezing the filling out. Use your fingers to tuck the filling in as you go. Think of it like rolling a sleeping bag — firm but gentle. When you reach the end, press down lightly to seal the seam.
  6. Chill for 10 minutes. This step is optional but highly recommended. Place the rolled tortillas in the fridge for about 10 minutes. This firms up the cream cheese and makes slicing much cleaner. If you are in a hurry, you can skip this, but your slices will be a little messier.
  7. Slice into pinwheels. Using a sharp knife, slice each rolled tortilla into 1-inch rounds. You should get about 5 to 6 slices per tortilla, depending on the size. Use a gentle sawing motion rather than pressing straight down — this keeps the shape intact.
  8. Assemble the bento box. Arrange the roll-ups in one compartment of the bento box. Fill the other compartments with grapes, carrots, and any other snacks you are including. If you are packing these for later, add a small ice pack to keep everything fresh.

Notes

For best results, use room-temperature cream cheese for easier spreading. Thicker slices of ham hold up better when rolling. If making ahead, keep roll-ups whole (unsliced) until morning to prevent drying out. To prevent sogginess, keep moist ingredients like tomatoes or cucumbers in a separate compartment. These roll-ups taste even better after sitting in the fridge for an hour or two as flavors meld.
