A dramatic, deep crimson sangria made with blood orange, pomegranate, and warming spices that tastes like autumn in a glass. Perfect for Halloween parties, it’s quick to prepare and can be made non-alcoholic.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Spanish Tempranillo or medium-bodied Merlot)
  • 1 cup blood orange juice (fresh-squeezed preferred)
  • 1/2 cup pomegranate juice
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 cup sparkling water or ginger ale
  • 2 blood oranges, thinly sliced
  • 1 navel orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup fresh pomegranate arils
  • 1 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries (optional)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 star anise pods
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise (or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract)

Instructions

  1. Prep your fruit first. Wash all fruit thoroughly. Slice blood oranges, navel orange, and apple into thin rounds (about 1/4 inch thick). Pick out any seeds from the oranges. Set aside about a third of the slices for garnish later.
  2. Build the base. In your pitcher, combine the remaining fruit slices, pomegranate arils, and cranberries if using. Add cinnamon sticks, star anise, and split vanilla bean. Use a wooden spoon to gently press the fruit a few times to release some juices.
  3. Add the liquids. Pour in blood orange juice, pomegranate juice, and brandy if using. Drizzle in honey or agave. Stir gently until honey dissolves.
  4. Add the wine. Pour the entire bottle of red wine over the fruit and spice mixture. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Chill and infuse. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  6. Right before serving, remove cinnamon sticks, star anise, and vanilla bean pod (or leave them in for visual drama). Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  7. Add the fizz. Pour in sparkling water or ginger ale and stir gently.
  8. Serve with flair. Fill glasses with ice if desired. Pour sangria over ice, making sure to include some fruit in each glass. Top with a fresh slice of blood orange and extra pomegranate arils.

Notes

The sangria improves with overnight chilling. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine with pomegranate-cranberry juice and hibiscus tea. Remove fruit after 24 hours if storing longer than 2 days. Keep sparkling water separate until serving to maintain fizz.
