This easy pumpkin dump cake is made with just 4 ingredients and one dish. It features a soft, custard-like pumpkin layer topped with a buttery, pecan-studded crunch that tastes like you fussed for hours.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (optional but recommended)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Spread the pumpkin puree evenly into the prepared dish. Sprinkle the pumpkin pie spice (if using) over the pumpkin and stir briefly in the dish.
  3. Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the pumpkin layer, breaking up any clumps with your fingers. Ensure all pumpkin is covered.
  4. Pour the melted butter evenly over the cake mix. Do not stir; let the butter soak in naturally.
  5. Sprinkle the chopped pecans over the top and press them gently into the buttered cake mix.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly. If browning too fast, tent with foil after 30 minutes.
  7. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. The pumpkin layer needs time to set.

Notes

Don’t stir the cake mix into the pumpkin; the layers are key. Let the cake cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the pumpkin layer to set. This cake tastes even better the next day. For a crispier top, you can broil for 1-2 minutes after baking. To make nut-free, skip pecans or use pepitas. For dairy-free, use melted coconut oil or vegan butter.
