Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, roughly chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Juice of 1 large lime (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup water or vegetable broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8–10 pitted black olives (whole)

Instructions

  1. Cook the aromatics: Heat olive oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  2. Toast the spices: Add cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, and cayenne (if using) to the pan. Stir constantly for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Blend the base: Transfer onion-spice mixture to a food processor. Add drained black beans, lime juice, and water or broth. Pulse to break down, then process until smooth, about 1-2 minutes. Scrape down sides halfway through.
  4. Season and adjust: Taste and add salt and pepper. If too thick, add another tablespoon of water. If too thin, let sit for a few minutes.
  5. Spread the base: Transfer black bean mixture to a serving platter or shallow bowl. Spread into an even layer about 1/2 inch thick, leaving a small border.
  6. Prepare the yogurt mixture: In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt, lime juice, and salt. Stir until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip a tiny corner off the bag.
  7. Create the spider web: Pipe a small circle of yogurt in the center of the black bean base. Pipe concentric circles around it, spaced about an inch apart (4-5 circles total). Use a toothpick or knife tip to drag from the center outward through all circles, wiping clean between each drag. Then drag from the outer edge toward the center between each spoke.
  8. Make the spiders: For each spider, cut a black olive in half lengthwise. One half is the body. Cut the other half into thin strips (4 per spider). Arrange strips on either side of the body to look like legs. Place spiders on the web.
  9. Chill and serve: Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve with tortilla chips, cucumber rounds, or bell pepper strips.

Notes

Don’t skip toasting the spices for deeper flavor. Let yogurt sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before piping for easier handling. Start with a tiny snip on the piping bag. Wipe toothpick clean between each drag for a clean web design. The black bean base can be made up to 2 days ahead; add yogurt web and olives just before serving.
