A sophisticated, spiced, tart-sweet mocktail punch that even self-proclaimed punch-haters can’t resist. Made with pure cranberry juice, fresh orange juice, and a warm spiced simple syrup, this festive drink is perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups pure cranberry juice (100% juice, not cocktail)
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice (about 3–4 oranges)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or honey)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks (Ceylon recommended)
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries (optional)
  • 1 piece fresh ginger (about 2 inches, peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 4 cups ginger ale (premium brand like Fever-Tree or Q Mixers)
  • Ice ring or large ice cubes (for serving)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs (for garnish)
  • Orange wheels or slices (for garnish)
  • Fresh cranberries (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the spiced simple syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine water and sugar. Place over medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves completely (2-3 minutes). Add cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise pods, allspice berries (if using), and sliced fresh ginger. Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat. Cover and let steep for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours for more intense flavor).
  2. Strain the syrup: Set a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl or liquid measuring cup. Pour the syrup through the strainer, pressing gently on the solids with the back of a spoon. Discard solids. Let syrup cool completely to room temperature (refrigerate 15-20 minutes to speed up).
  3. Combine the base: In a large pitcher or punch bowl, combine pure cranberry juice and fresh orange juice. Add cooled spiced simple syrup and stir well. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed (add more syrup or a squeeze of lemon).
  4. Chill thoroughly: Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight (up to 24 hours) for best flavor.
  5. Prepare the ice ring (optional): Fill an ice ring mold halfway with water. Arrange fresh cranberries, orange slices, and rosemary sprigs in the water. Freeze until solid (4-6 hours), then add more water to fill completely and freeze overnight.
  6. Add the fizz and serve: Just before serving, remove chilled base from refrigerator. Gently stir in ginger ale, pouring slowly down the side to preserve carbonation. Add ice ring or ice cubes and stir gently once.
  7. Garnish and present: Float fresh rosemary sprigs and orange wheels on top. For individual servings, fill glasses with ice (if not using ice ring) and pour punch over. Garnish each glass with a small rosemary sprig and thin orange slice.

Notes

Don’t boil the spices—gentle steeping prevents bitterness. Serve ice-cold for best flavor. Add ginger ale just before serving to keep fizz. The base can be made up to 24 hours ahead. For a warm version, heat the base (without ginger ale) and serve in mugs with a cinnamon stick stirrer.
